Think Before Taking Action — Avoid Regrets

Many times we see people around us who speak or react to some life situation immediately, but then regret it later.

Heck! I used to experience that in my own life sometimes.

So, once and for all — I went back and decided to solve this problem once and for all. To understand how our mind works, and what makes us instantly respond or lose our cool sometimes ?

What I found was that the answer lies within us

Think before you act
Think before you act

Its our insecurities that lead us to purge out our emotional content without thinking about the consequences. More often than not — its is our internal method of dealing with our internal chaos.

I read many books on these after that, and the ones that stood out are —

  1. 📚 The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book) 👉🏻 https://amzn.to/3ahuw43
The Four Agreements — Don Miguel Ruiz

What they emphasize is empathy

These books tell us how different people think, and how what we speak have different connotations or affects on people around us.

This made me think how important it is to carefully choose our words before we speak anything.

(Read The four agreements for more on this)

Then, I came up with a trick that what if I always put myself in others shoes before I react to a situation. This helped me a lot

Putting myself in their shoes, instantly gave me their perspective and led me to empathize with them.

And, I was able to relate more to them and what they said.

This made me automatically choose my words carefully, and think before reacting — about how what my next action is going to impact them. What will be its consequences on them (imagining how I would feel, if I was in their shoes right now)

Upon this realization, it became clear to me- that my earlier spontaneous reaction (which sometimes I regretted later) was rooted out of my own insecurities. It was my way of hiding my fears (or squashing them before they sprouted).
